Von Wright, Goble, and Chisholm \& Sosa each in separate ways proposed to define an operator `good' in terms of `better'. This paper presents counter-examples to all three proposals. This shows that there is a significant sense of `good' not captured by the definitions. (It also leaves open whether or not the definitions do catch other significant senses of `good').
