Bjarni Jónsson's contributions in algebra (Q1327458)

The paper under review is dedicated to Professor Bjarni Jónsson on his 70th birthday. It consists of two parts. The first one is a brief survey of his main contributions in the following areas; Boolean algebras, product decompositions, other constructions for relational structures, constructions in varieties (free algebras, automorphism groups, congruence lattices, free products, amalgamation and pure embeddings, algebraic extensions, congruence varieties), groups and semigroups, expository works (``pure'' lattice theory is not included). The second part is a more detailed summary of Jónsson's work on congruence distributivity and the development to which it has led. A bibliography of 406 papers containing references to Jónsson's results indicates his influence.
