The aim of this paper is to give a theory of lifting problems which permits to develop categorical homotopy. Then the axioms of closed model (homotopy) categories, in the sense of \textit{D. G. Quillen} [``Homotopical algebra'', Lect. Notes Math. 43. Berlin etc. : Springer (1967; Zbl 0168.20903)], can be restricted to lifting except the one concerning weak equivalences. A notion of smallness for objects permits to obtain a sufficient condition for the axioms to be satisfied.
