The paper investigates the numerical solution of a linear Fredholm integral equation using Galerkin methods with Legendre orthonormal polynomials and Gaussian quadrature. The main result of this paper is Theorem 4.1. which provides convergence rates of the discrete Galerkin approximation and improves the results of \textit{K. E. Atkinson} [A survey of numerical methods for the solution of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. SIAM 7, 230 p. (1976; Zbl 0353.65069)].
