In this paper, we give an elementary proof of a norm estimate given by \textit{S. Igari} [Proc. Jap. Acad., Ser. A 62, 292-293 (1986; Zbl 0623.42011)], for the Kakeya maximal operator restricted to functions of product type. The author's proof also gives an improvement of the result.
