The author obtains some lower bounds for the spectral radii of real, symmetric, and skew-symmetric matrices. These results generalize the result recently published by \textit{P. Tarazaga} [ibid. 149, 97-110 (1991; Zbl 0723.15014)] for a lower bound on the spectral radius of a symmetric positive definite matrix. In addition, the author provides new lower bounds for the spectral radius of skew-symmetric matrices, and applies these results to a problem involving the stability of fixed points in recurrent neural networks.
