The authors consider multi-input multi-output systems of the form \[ \dot x(t) = A x(t) + Bu(t), \qquad y(t) = C x(t) + D u(t) \] which are unitary, i.e. the induced operator \((x,u) \mapsto (x,y)\) is unitary. An explicit construction for decomposing the system into unitary subsystems by factorizing the transfer function in relation to the corresponding invariant subspaces is given.
