One defines four special types of shift pairs related to the properties of the eigenvalues as candidates for shifting, and, correspondingly, a set of possible feedback gains can be designed to shift certain eigenvalues to other real or complex scalars. If the open-loop system is regular, real and impulse free, these properties are preserved in the closed-loop system. Finally an example illustrates the design procedure.
