In I. Kapodistrias' views -- the first governuor of the free Greece -- army and education were the pillars on which the establishment of a modern independent nation should rely. Accordingly in 1828, the Greek military Academy was founded by Colonel Karl Heideck, following the model of the French Ecole Polytechnique. In such an institution, mathematics was the main object of study (main textbooks employed: Legendre's geometry and trigonometry, Bourdon's arithmetics and algebra, Monge's descriptive geometry). Besides mathematical mechanics, fortification and topography, applied subjects such as construction, drawing, etc., received special attention. After presenting the also newly created Artillery Academy and the Central Military School, the author of the study under review -- dedicates a whole section to Ioannis Karantinos, founder and contributor to the Ionian Academy of physics and mathematics.
