A self-dual code is a code satisfying \(C=C^\perp\). The shadow of such a code is the coset of the self-dual code in the orthogonal of the subcode of doubly even vectors. The authors define \(s\)-extremal codes, which are self-dual codes where the minimum weight of the code and the shadow are as large as possible. They give an existence result for \(1\)-designs and \(2\)-designs in these codes and relate them to codes with long shadows.
