The convexity property of two classical finite elements and of the associated piecewise polynomial \(C^{1}\) surfaces is analyzed. These are the piecewise cubic quadrilateral of \textit{G. Fraeijs de Veubeke} [Bending and stretching of plates, in: Conference on Matrix Methods in Structural Mechanics, Wright Patterson AFB, OH (1965)] and the piecewise quadratic rectangle of \textit{R. Sibson} and \textit{G. D. Thomson} [A seamed quadratic element for contouring, Comput. J. 24, 378-382 (1981)].
