The authors evaluate the axisymmetric state of stress in an infinite elastic circular cylinder, a finite part of it (inclusion) being under eigenstrain. The solution in terms of Bessel functions corresponds to that given already by \textit{M. V. Barton} [J. Appl. Mech. 8, A97--A104 (1941; Zbl 0063.00232)]. Some numerical results are presented. The paper is intended to be used for the investigation of the propagation of strain discontinuity during thermoelastic phase transformation in shape memory alloy wires.
