The authors consider nonlinear equations of thin elastic plates (with thickness \(\varepsilon\)). Using scaling and formal asymptotic expansions with respect to \(\varepsilon\) they identify the leading term as a solution to the von Kármán equations. The present paper generalizes previous results of \textit{P. G. Ciarlet} [Arch. Ration.l Mech. Anal. 73, 349--389 (1980; Zbl 0443.73034)]. Namely, here a part \(\gamma_2\) of the thin lateral boundary is assumed to be free.
