The authors compare ``automatic'' (numerical) differentiation using ADOL-C with symbolic differentiation using MACSYMA. The results for three benchmark systems show that ADOL-C is superior to MACSYMA in code generation and compilation, and there are no limits of applicability for ADOL-C. However, the computation time was 10 to 40 times higher than that of MACSYMA. Both programs are found to provide equal accuracy.
