In this survey paper the author collects results and open problems on the theory of flocks of circle planes and their connection to translation planes and generalized quadrangles. The reference list is extensive, but the fundamental paper by \textit{G. Heimbeck} [Geom. Dedicata 22, 235-245 (1987; Zbl 0609.51001)] is missing. The paper provides a very readable introduction to the subject.
