Here the authors present a framework allowing the formulation of the general hybrid filtering or state estimation problem, and they derive the optimal Bayesian solution to this problem. This solution is obtained `by fairly simple recursions', the recursions being numerically solvable by the use of a particle filter. The theory is illustrated by simulation of a radar target tracking problem.
