This paper analyzes an approximation of a two-dimensional exterior Helmholtz problem. The approach combines: -- a mixed-type finite element approximation, -- with a fictitious domain method. The authors develop a careful study of the convergence of the solution and compare the performance with more classical approximation methods. Finally, some numerical examples illustrate the efficiency of this new methodology.
