The paper discusses an optimal control problem for the first-order semilinear hyperbolic system with one spatial variable. The controls appear in the initial and boundary conditions. There is given a necessary optimality condition expressed by means of characteristics of the system. An iterative optimization procedure (based on this necessary optimality condition) is proposed.
