In this paper A. Yu. Onishchenko and Th. Yu. Popelensky compute the rational cohomology of the free loop space for a simply connected closed 4-dimensional manifold. Their main tool it the Sullivan theory of minimal models and the Vigué-Sullivan model for the free loop space. The authors use a Serre spectral sequence in models to obtain an explicit and complete formula for the Poincaré series of the free loop space with the second Betti number as a parameter.
