The authors study the dynamic response of a sliding mode controller slider-crank mechanism which is driven by a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous servo motor. The equations of motion are first derived and then reduced. The sliding mode controller is designed in a classical approach which involves the bounds on various structural uncertainties, or again, parametric variations and external load disturbances. Unfortunately, these data are not always available in advance, and to circumvent this drawback, the authors propose a fuzzy controller. Numerical results illustrate the approach.
