The authors develop modified stepsize and order strategies for a variable order Adams code. The main purpose of the modifications to the known code is to obtain smoother performance on mildly stiff problems without affecting its good behaviour on non-stiff problems. The advantages of the proposed strategies are illustrated on the van der Pol equation.
