Helmut R. Salzmann passed away on March 8, 2022 at the age of 91. His major field of research was topological geometry, especially topological projective planes, and he was active almost till the end of his life. The author reports on the work of Salzmann on the subject, with special emphasis on his main problems and results. Included is a complete list of Salzmann's publications, the last one dating from 2019.
