The first main theorem in the paper under review (Theorem 1.1) is that given an affine surface group action, the linear part does not lie in a Hitchin component. In other words, if the linear part is in the Hitchin component, the action is not properly discontinuous. Another main result is a negative curvature analogue of the first main theorem.
