The paper describes the role of mathematics in the education of engineers in Spain, in the period from the end of XVIII c. till the civil war 1936-1939. According to the author there were then 3 main phases in that development: imitation of French military schools with the eminent position of mathematics; separation of general scientific and engineering education (3 years of the former were obligatory to enter the latter), resulting in diminishing the role of mathematics; originated in Germany, antimathematical attitude to engineer training. In spite of occasionally hard times, however, the ``marriage of convenience'' persisted.
