The paper deals with the absorption of Greek science and natural philosophy by the Islamic civilisation in the Abbasside era. Major topics of the article are the contamination of established arabo-iranic astronomy and astrology by the works of Hellenistic authors, and in particular the influence of two major works of Ptolemy (the \textit{Almagest} and the \textit{Liber Quadripartitum}) on the work of different Arabic scientists. Insisting on the importance of Latin translations of these arabic texts for the formation of natural philosophy in Europe in the Middle Ages, the author presents a typical example of different Latin translation of an Arabic text: Ahmad ibn Yusuf's \textit{Kitab al-Tamara}, in Latin translation \textit{Centiloquium,} that was erroneously ascribed to Ptolemy by medieval philosophers.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0959.00025].
