The authors investigate the generalized Cartan form for general variational problems in the setting of exterior differential systems as described by Griffiths (1982). The generalized Cartan form for the classical variational problems with constraints is computed. They consider the generalized Cartan form for a linear-quadratic control problem as an example. This is related to the Hamiltonian equations derived from the maximum principle.
