In an exquisite graphical form, the volume gathers the lectures held by Carl Gustav J. Jacobi at the University of Berlin, between 1847-1848, on theoretical problems of analytical mechanics. After a comprehensive introduction, presenting the position held by Jacobi in the field of mathematical physics, the reception and echoes of his studies among his contemporaries, the editor -- Dr. Helmut Pulte (University of Bochum) -- issues the famous Vorlesungen über analytische Mechanik. The main chapters discuss the following topics: historical background (resources, principles, precursors); problems of statistics and its foundation; shifting towards dynamics and its specific principles; the general laws of dynamics or the motion integrals; the principle of the smallest angle and Hamilton's principle; Lagrange and Hamilton form of dynamics; the Hamilton-Jacobi theory; the theory of disorder. The book is recommended to all those interested in understanding a phenomenon from its very inception, following its evolution up to its latest forms of manifestation (to put it philosophically!).
