The paper is devoted to the presentation and discussion of \textit{The Whetstone of Witte} by Recorde (1557) [\url{https://archive.org/download/TheWhetstoneOfWitte/TheWhetstoneOfWitte_text.pdf}]. The author concentrates on the algebraic content of the book including both the introduction of variables and the discussion of equations. The latter includes the introduction of the equal sign. Attention is drawn also to some of the interesting and extraordinary details in other sections of the book.
