\(2\)-star permutable categories are generalizations of regular Mal'tsev categories and of normal subtractive categories. The paper characterizes these categories by some property of a special class of pushouts (so called star-regular pushouts). Further, the \(3\times 3\) Lemma from homology theory and the Cuboid lemma for regular Mal'tsev categories are unified to a general lemma whose validity characterizes \(2\)-star permutable categories.
