The authors propose and analyze a general concept of a superposition rule for systems of higher order differential equations. Some specific types of such superposition rules that appear in the literature have been studied and other new types have been introduced and investigated. To highlight the interest of these methods, they are illustrated by means of examples extracted from physics and mathematics. Special attention is paid to second- and third-order Kummer-Schwarz equations.
