Giovanni Prodi (1925--2010) was an authoritative Italian mathematician working in many fields of modern mathematics: fluid dynamics, nonlinear analysis, biomathematics. This paper points out his outstanding role in Italian general culture, due to his commitment in all the facets of mathematical education. In this fields he dealt both with research (for example in his `mathematics as discovery' project, inspired by George Polya's writings, or in the organization of the `didactic research' teams) and innovative teaching activity (for example in his math courses for biologists).
