In the 80's, Vaisman asked which compact complex surfaces admit locally conformally Kähler metrics. In this paper, the author summarizes results of various geometers about this question, leading to a complete answer in the case of all known compact complex surfaces. Links between locally conformally Kähler structures and generalized geometry on complex surfaces are also discussed.
