For linear algebraic systems with arbitrarily signed coefficients and with the number of unknowns exceeding the number of equations, a discrete maximum principle is stated in the formal language of linear algebra (without resorting to any concepts from the theory of difference schemes). Particular difference and other algorithms with grid stencils are special cases of the resulting algebraic treatments. The cases of homogeneous algebraic systems and systems of equations with a right-hand side are considered.
