Fundamental relations of kinematics of an elasto-plastic continuum are formulated using a multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient, dual variables and the covariance principle. A thermodynamically consistent system of differential and algebraic equations is derived in the reference configuration to describe the rate-independent inelastic material behaviour. NEWLINEUsing a deformation law and considering isotropic and kinematic hardening, the authors present a numerical example of an infinitely long plane-strain strip with a circular hole in the centre subjected to uniaxial displacement.
