Some time ago the reviewer proved boundedness for families of abelian varieties, and investigated rigidity (whether a family can be deformed). Here the second point is investigated in much more detail. Using results of Satake a classification of non-rigid families is given. Especially it follows that such a family must have relative dimension at least eight.
