In this very interesting paper, the authors show that the following two properties of automatic groups hold for left-cancellative automatic monoids: (1) An automatic group that has the directed fellow traveller property is finitely presented; (2) The first order Dehn functions of an automatic group are bounded above by a quadratic function.
