The paper is an interview with the Director of the Hanoi Mathematical Institute, Professor Hoang Tuy, who has actively participated to the development of Mathematics in Vietnam, both during the war and after. I would have personally preferred to see a little more about the mathematics currently being done in Vietnam, but the interview is, still, of great interest. Its major quality is that it provides us with a glimpse of the socialist point of view on the so called ``applicable mathematics''. The most illuminating remarks of Professor Tuy are those which describe his changing from a real analyst into an expert in operation research. Definitely an interesting piece of work, which should not be left alone.
