In this paper it is shown that, by using an appropriate energy functional which includes the work done by the nonconservative forces, an energy approach to the stability problem of continuous nonconservative systems is possible. Flutter and divergence criteria are derived. As an example, rods subjected to follower forces have been used for an application of the theory. Numerical calculations confirm that the above-mentioned criteria are practical and quite powerful.
