This is a report about a new institution, established in 1981 by the U.S. National Science Foundation at the University of Minnesota, in order to foster interdisciplinary research and connections between mathematics and other sciences and between fields of mathematics. The programs for the first and for the second year (1982-1984) are shortly outlined (Continuum and statistical approaches to phase transition, mathematical models for the economics of decentralized resource allocation), future programs are announced.
