The paper is concerned with the problem of robustness improvement of adaptive controllers. By incorporating into the design the prior knowledge of the transfer function that is attainable with an ideal regulator (in the absence of plant uncertainties), the author gives a modification to the standard model reference scheme by designing an outer-loop compensator. For similar modifications in the physical applications of adaptive control schemes see \textit{K. S. Narendra} and \textit{R. V. Monopoli} [Applications of adaptive control, (1980; Zbl 0477.93004)]. Using conic sector stability theorems a global condition for the enhancement of the stability robustness of the system with no deterioration of performance is established.
