The main result of the paper provides a Fredholm index formula for Toeplitz operators with continuous symbols on finite connected domains in \({\mathbb C}\). In addition, the cohomology groups of the Toeplitz algebras on general connected domains are discussed, and the essential spectra of Toeplitz operators with \(QC\) symbols (on bounded, open connected and nonempty subsets of \({\mathbb C}\)) are computed.
