This paper considers Lie algebras of operators on Banach spaces, but the questions were motivated by questions about Lie groups acting on \(C^*\)- algebras. The paper gives a structure theorem for perturbations of abelian Lie algebras. In Section 4 these results are applied to examples of groups acting on \(C^*\)-algebras.
