The authors study the stability properties of finite difference schemes for the heat equation with nonlocal boundary conditions and constant transport coefficients. Necessary and sufficient conditions with respect to the initial data are derived for an energy based norm. It is shown that for a given choice of the norm the stability conditions cannot be weakened.
