The main result of this paper is that if M is a compact Kähler manifold with positive first Chern class \(c_ 1(M)\) then an invariant \(\eta\) (M) may be defined such that \(\eta (M)<1\) implies the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric on M. \(\eta\) (M) is obtained from the study of an inequality discussed by \textit{T. Aubin} [J. Funct. Anal. 57, 143-153 (1984; Zbl 0538.53063)].
