This textbook is based on lectures which are presented by the author to undergraduate and graduate-level students of electrical engineering at Kaiserslautern University. The aim is to present the theory of signals and communication systems. The main part concerns the classical treatment of time-continuous signals and systems (4 chapters), time-discrete signals and systems (3 chapters), and the relationships between these two classes (1 chapter). The different types of Fourier transforms are summarized. The book is completed by more advanced material on correlation functions and their spectra, Hilbert transform, linear time-variant systems, and nonlinear systems. The presentation is restricted on a mathematical level which is suited to engineering students, and includes a lot of examples and practical hints which are useful especially for this group of readers.
