Lower and upper branches of fuzzy numbers are approximated by means of some types of parametrized monotonic functions (several types of splines), thus yielding an LU representation of fuzzy numbers. The paper shows the advantages of the use of LU-fuzzy numbers in several applications of fuzzy calculus and they allow error-controlled approximations in the fuzzy calculus. Note that an LU-fuzzy calculator, implementing the basic fuzzy arithmetic operations and calculus by an interactive desk-top software, is available by contacting the authors.
