This paper gives a comprehensive summary of the theory and practice of successive overrelaxation. After the general theory is outlined, the important cases of \((q,p-q)\)-cyclic consistently ordered matrices and block \(p\)-cyclic repartitioning are examined. Modified, symmetric and unsymmetric SOR methods, accelebrated overrelaxation, nonstationary, and higher-order methods are finally analyzed.
