Control problems modelled by nonlinear differential algebraic equations with output are studied. The aim is to construct a state feedback law such that asymptotic tracking of a given reference output is achieved. Similar problems have been considered, for example, by \textit{H. Krishnan} and \textit{N. H. McClamroch} [Automatica 30, No. 12, 1885-1897 (1994; Zbl 0815.93057)]. Under assumptions which are relatively mild in comparison to those of Krishnan/McClamroch, the author constructs a coordinate change in state space such that the transformed system has the desired properties: One can find feedback laws such that the closed loop system has solutions for all consistent initial values, these solutions are bounded, and asymptotic output tracking is achieved. If the transformed system is well-behaved (say, for example, bounded input-bounded state), then this provides a solution to the original tracking problem.
