In this article, the author retraces the studies of Gino Fano, a renowned Italian algebraic geometer active in the first half of the \(20^{\text{th}}\) century, whose importance is reflected in the fact that we now refer to varieties with an ample anticanonical system as ``Fano varieties.''\N\NThe interesting article, written in Italian, follows Gino Fano's research in chronological order, starting from his initial motivation to study rationality problems in dimension 3 -- spurred by the then-recent (now classical) results of Enriques and Castelnuovo on analogous problems in dimension 2 -- up to his later works on the irrationality of the cubic and on some other of the varieties that we now call ``Fano threefolds.''
